SATURDAY OCTOBER 19: 13-14:30: MOROCCAN CHAABI

North African Movement: Chaâbi of Morocco

This workshop will explore the movement of Chaâbi, the "peoples'" music of Morocco. Chaâbi is a dance style that reflects the voice and energy of community - it is high energy, celebratory, and pushes one to release without inhibitions. Commonly with the symbolism of "horses" in its movement, Chaâbi also connects dancers to dance with strength, groundedness, and force - such as a horse.

Students will familiarize themselves with fundamentals of movement and establish/continue a relationship with Moroccan rhythm on the path of becoming musically centered social dancers.

Please come dressed comfortably. Bring regular fashion scarf or Moroccan Mozuna belt. (some may be for sale)

SATURDAY OCTOBER 19: 14:30-16:00: ALGERIAN RAÏ

North African Movement: Raï of Algeria

This workshop will explore the movement of Raï, the rebel "groove" music of Algeria. Raï music is a genre from West Algeria, popularized in the city of Oran and means "opinion" as it is an outlet for marginalized Algerians to express their grievances with life. Its dance is soulful, simple, with strong articulation on hip isolations (similarily to Kizomba).

Students will learn footwork, movement, and the "groove" of dancing to Raï and establish/continue a relationship with its rhythm on the path of becoming musically centered social dancers.

Please come dressed comfortably. Bring regular fashion scarf.

SUNDAY OCTOBER 20: 13-14:30: ALGERIAN ANDALUSIAN

North African Movement: Algéroise from Algeria

This workshop will explore the movement of Algéroise, the Andalusian influenced music style from Algeria. Algéroise is a classic traditional style representing the essence of "Alger La Blanche" or "El Behdja" - the port city of Algiers that is distinct in its white colonial architecture bedded across the blue Mediterranean. This dance is feminine, while heavily rhythmic and meditative. Students will learn to dance with thoughtful intention and coordination of "les mouchoirs" in their hands.

Students will familiarize themselves with footwork, fundamental movements and establish/continue a relationship with Algéroise rhythms and aesthetic.

Please come dressed comfortably. Bring regular fashion scarf and two small handkerchiefs or tissues.

SUNDAY OCTOBER 20: 14:30-16:00: ALGERIAN CHAOUI (BERBER)

North African Movement: Chaoui from Algeria

This workshop will explore a folkloric dance from one tribe of the indigenous people (Amazigh) of North Africa, known as the Chaouiya. This group is home to the region of the Aures mountains in East Algeria. Chaoui dance is maternal and grounded, truly symbolic of this tribe's respect to the divine energy of nature and agriculture. Famously known by the "bounce" of the belly, this style is danced with strong isolations in the pelvis/womb area.

Students will learn the core isolation of the "belly bounce", fundamental footwork, and create/continue a relationship with Chaoui rhythmic heartbeat.

Please come dressed comfortably. Bring two regular fashion scarfs.
